Using MS Frontpage

Your account can be configured with the Microsoft FrontPage 2002 (TM) server extensions.  The server extensions are a series of CGI programs that allow to manage your website.  The FP 2002 Server extensions are compatible with the FrontPage 2000, 2002, and 2003 client software that you would use to edit/maintain your website.

When your site is configured you will be sent some introductory instructions, which are repeated below for easy reference.

 Using FrontPage on our Servers

When you signup for FrontPage service you will be sent a username and password that will be used just for FrontPage access.

The FrontPage Server Extensions includes a web based "Site Administrator" that will let you add/delete/modify users and their roles in maintaining your website.  The Site Administrator also allows you to work with "Sub-Webs".  FrontPage 2002/3 users can access this from the Tools in FrontPage.  Select "Server", and "Administration Home" to open a web browser window to the "Site Administrator".  FrontPage 2000 users can find a link to the Site Administrator from the  Site Control Panel.

This is strictly an introduction and we recommend that you consult the documentation which came with FrontPage before attempting any major updates to your website. Even some of our experienced webmasters have lost full websites with a wrong click in FrontPage.

We also recommend you be very careful when applying a FrontPage theme to your website. If you allow it, FrontPage will go through every page on your website and apply the theme. This may also include pages used with some of the website components you may have installed with one of our Control Panel Wizards. Use caution when applying a theme. If FrontPage "breaks" your shopping cart or forum pages, you may be forced to reinstall the wizard from scratch and may loose hours of work.

Mail Form Feedback

The most common item desired is the feedback/order form. To create this type of form on your page do the following:

FrontPage 2000
  1. Add some text to your page, like: "send us some feedback", then highlight the text with the mouse, and from the top menu select Insert - Hyperlink

  2. In the "Create Hyperlink" box select the tab "New Page", which will allow you to create a new form. If your form is already present, you can either enter the page name, or select "Browse".

  3. If you selected "New Page", on this tab enter the page Title and File Name for the "Page URL" -- you do NOT need to have the complete URL to your site, JUST the name of the file. Select "Okay".

  4. On the NewPage Box which appears, select "Feedback Form", and press "Okay". You will see the new page in the editor, remember the purple text is commentary, and will not appear on the page. NOTICE that part of the page is outlined with dashes "---", that is your form. You may edit the from as you desire to get the proper info.

  5. To make the form return via E-mail  place the mouse inside the form area, right click and select "Form Properties." Now, select "Send to" and enter the E-Mail address where this form should be sent (delete any entry in the filename box). You can click on the options and advanced buttons for additional features that allow you to set the subject and also identify the name of the form field which should be used as the from address of the message you receive.

FrontPage 2002

  1. Go to the Insert Menu and select "Form," then "Form" again.

  2. "Submit" & "Reset" buttons should appear.  You may start entering your form field names to the left or to the right of these buttons.
  3. Type a field name, i.e. "Address."  Go to the Insert Menu and select "Form."  Select the type of field that you want (i.e. textbox, drop-down, etc.).

  4. Once you have created the form field, select it with your mouse and right click, select "Form Field Properties."  Enter a name for this field.

  5. Once you have created all your form fields, right click within the form and enter the E-Mail address where you want to have the form contents sent to when someone submits the form.

You should be able to save the page you created to your site, and send yourself feedback or an order!

Editing Page Off-line and On-line

Working On-line: This can be confusing to some people.  The "simplest" way to use FrontPage is to open your web site directly and make changes

WARNING: When working on-line, you will actually be working on the web server. Changes you make to your web site are INSTANTANEOUS!! Use caution when applying FrontPage themes, as the theme often tends to apply itself to the whole site--including pages previously installed with one of our Control Panel "Wizards."

1. On the "File" menu, select "Open," then click "Web Folders." Click on the option to "Create New Folder." On the tool bar, this will be the third icon from the right.

2. You will be prompted to enter a location to add. This will be the location of your web site (http://www.your-domain.com/. Enter your Front Page user name and password.

3. Click "OK."

4. You will now be asked to "Enter the name for this web folder. This will default to your URL (www.your-domain.com). Click "FINISH."

5. Select the page you wish to edit, and select "Save" from the "File" menu (or click the floppy disk on the toolbar). Your changes will now be automatically uploaded to your web site.

Working Off-line: When working off-line, you will be working on a copy of your web site that will be saved to your local computer. The changes you make will not be made to your actual web site until you "Publish" (Steps 7 & 8 below).

1. Open the "File" menu in FrontPage, click "New", and select "Web."  If using FrontPage 2002, open the "File" menu, click "New", and select "Page or Web."  FrontPage 2002: on the right side of the screen, click on "Empty Web."

2. Select the "Import Web Wizard" icon. You will see a box that says "Specify location of new web." Put in the name of the directory on your local computer where you wish to have the contents saved. Then click "OK."

3. You will bring up a window that says "Import Web Wizard - Choose Source." Select the option that says "From a world wide web site." Type in the location of your web site (www.your-domain.com). Then click the "NEXT" button.

4. You will now see a screen titled "Choose Download Amount." We recommend that you select the option "Limit to text and image files." This will pull down your HTML and image files. Now click "NEXT."

5. You will see a screen titled "Import Web Wizard - Finish." Click the "FINISH" button.

6. You may see a a box will pop up titled "Import Web Wizard." which says : "The web you are importing was created with Frontpage. To avoid conflicts..." Clicking "Yes" will import the existing website and apply the same themes and borders to the web which will be created on your computer.

7. On your local computer you will now have a listing of your web files. When you get the message that says "Import web has finished," click "OK."

8. Now, select the file you wish to edit, and make your necessary changes. Save your changes to each page you modify. When you are content with the changes you've made to your pages, go the the "File" menu and select "Publish Web." Specify the location to publish (http://www.your-domain.com). You will see two options asking whether you wish to publish all pages or just the changed pages. After you've made a selection, click "PUBLISH."

9. You will now be prompted for a username and password.  Your changes will then be published to your web site.
